About the Presbyterian
Church (USA)
Presbyterian refers to a representative form of church
government and simply means "governed by elders". Each congregation elects
elders from among its members, who together with the pastor form the
session, which governs the local church.
With all Christians, Presbyterians affirm
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and through Him, worship the one God -
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. With other Protestants, Presbyterians place
special emphasis on God's Word in Scripture and on God's grace by which we
are saved through faith.
Presbyterians stress God's sovereignty as
Creator and Redeemer and believe God's Spirit inspires us to receive the new
life that is ours through Christ.
All of the more than 11,000 congregations in
the Presbyterian Church USA have their own uniqueness, but together they
share a common vision - a vision of the Church as the people of God who:
Share the good news of
God's love in word and deed. Care for one another through their worship,
nurture, fellowship and service. Strive for a more just and compassionate
world.
